On Wednesday, May 25, I sat down with Lobo Tiggre, aka Louis James, aka The Independent Speculator, aka an overall great guy with two decades of experience in the mining industry, to have a conversation about uranium, shipping, oil, platinum, gold, silver, and even copper.
During the first part of our conversation, I gave Lobo my list of metals that I’m bullish on (uranium, platinum, gold, silver, copper) and asked him to give his two cents on each one of them. We also ended up talking about shipping, which Lobo understands might be a promising proposition but has chosen not to invest in as it falls outside his circle of competence.
Lobo told me that he holds a very large cash position at the moment as he expects a big overall market crash in 2022, which – he tells me – will bring everything down, including the commodities sector.
Tiggre hasn’t been selling, but he also hasn’t been buying anything as of lately. He told me he is “sending as much money as possible” to his brokerage to be able to take advantage of an upcoming opportunity. He doesn’t want to sell, though, because nobody can foresee everything. So, a crash may not come in 2022, 2023, or even until 2030 – nobody really knows. However, the percentage of cash he’s now holding doesn’t cause a large holding/opportunity cost so he can afford to hold it.
Other than that, Lobo told me that the basis of his portfolio is made up of gold & silver. He said the precious metals represent about 50% of his holdings. Uranium makes up another 30%.
During the second part of our conversation, Tiggre and I spoke about how to become and remain a profitable speculator during frothy markets and long periods of time. That part, although less title-worthy, was a very important one, in my opinion.
