Inside a VIP Mining Event With a Fund Manager & 9 CEOs

SPONSORED CONTENT!

I was asked to host a so-called VIP event at PDAC earlier this month. Although, to be fair, they asked me, so that already raises questions about how VIP this thing really was?!

Usually, these events are a familiar mix of mediocre food, polished promotional fluff, and the occasional useful nugget buried somewhere in the noise. My first instinct was to pass. But Ore Group told me I’d have real freedom with the format, and they promised me good food, so I gave it a shot.

Instead of the usual long-winded company presentations, I capped each speaker at 8 minutes and actually enforced it. No wandering off into the weeds. No 30-minute corporate lullabies. If anyone felt they had more to say, they had to sit down with me for an interview, where I could interrupt, push back, and ask the follow-up questions that matter.

We were also joined by Tom Woolrych, a geologist turned fund manager at Deutsche Rohstoff.

I asked Tom how he listens to these presentations with a sharper ear, what he looks for, and which questions investors should be asking management teams.

To close the event, Tom gave a 30-minute keynote on the companies he likes, why he likes them, and how he typically filters and selects junior mining companies worth speculating on.
