Why Should I Care About Geophysics?

According to Dustin Perry, geophysics is just one tool among many used to identify mineralized systems, helping to reduce the search area for drilling and increase the chances of hitting a viable deposit.

You’re looking for a needle in a haystack. Geophysics either reduces the size of the haystack or increases the size of the needle”.

Geophysics can detect changes in rock properties such as sulfide abundance, density, and magnetic properties, often highlighting areas much larger than the actual deposit. However, Perry acknowledged that most anomalies are false positives, stating,

Most of them don’t mean much. That’s why you don’t just look at geophysics—you need geochemistry, structure, and geology, and you need to be in the right location.”


What Types of Geophysics Matter Most?

According to Perry, the most relevant geophysical surveys for exploration include:

  • Induced Polarization (IP) – Commonly used for porphyry and epithermal systems, as it identifies areas with sulfides.
  • Magnetics – Useful for mapping geological structures and identifying alteration zones.
  • Electromagnetics (EM) – Effective for detecting sulfide-rich deposits, such as nickel or VMS deposits.
  • Gravity Surveys – Can identify density contrasts associated with different rock types.

He noted that there are airborne and ground-based versions of these surveys, with their applicability depending on deposit type and scale. Perry stated,

IP works incredibly well for porphyries because of the broad sulfide halos, but for orogenic gold, it’s less of a standard tool.”


Is IP Always the Best Geophysics Method?

Perry emphasized that while IP surveys are a powerful tool for detecting sulfide halos in porphyry systems, they are not universally applicable across all deposit types.

Different mineral systems respond best to specific geophysical techniques—for instance, VMS and nickel sulfide deposits often yield stronger signals with EM surveys, while magnetics and gravity are more useful for mapping structures in orogenic gold systems.

He cautioned that relying solely on geophysics, particularly IP, can be misleading, as many anomalies turn out to be barren pyrite zones rather than economic mineralization.

“Just having an IP anomaly without anything else doesn’t mean that much,” he said, emphasizing the need to integrate geochemistry, structural mapping, and historical drilling to accurately assess a target’s potential.


Do Exotic Geophysics Technologies Work?

Several emerging geophysical methods were discussed, including:

  • Ambient Noise Tomography (ANT) – Uses natural seismic waves to map underground structures.
  • Muon Technology – Detects sub-surface density variations based on cosmic ray interactions.
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and other niche technologies – Less commonly used in mineral exploration but can have applications in specific scenarios.

Perry was skeptical of most exotic technologies, stating that their effectiveness varies.

You could blow all your money on these. You need to figure out what works for you and what problem you’re trying to solve.”


What Does an IP Survey Really Tell Me?

IP surveys measure chargeability, indicating the presence of sulfide minerals. However, Perry cautioned that high chargeability does not necessarily mean economic mineralization.

More often than not, it just means pyrite”.

Chargeability anomalies must be interpreted alongside other data sets to be meaningful.


How Are IP Surveys Used in Marketing?

IP surveys are frequently used in investor presentations, sometimes in misleading ways.

Perry noted that color scaling on geophysical maps can be manipulated to make anomalies look more significant.

Some companies will show an anomaly at 12 millivolts in bright red, while another company’s map won’t show red until it hits 100 millivolts”.

Speculators should always check the scale bars on geophysical maps and compare them against industry benchmarks to assess their significance properly.


What Are Examples of Successful Geophysics-Guided Discoveries?

Several major deposits have been identified using geophysics:

  • Red Chris (Canada) – Chargeability anomalies at depth led to a significant discovery.
  • KSM (Canada) – Large-scale geophysical anomalies corresponded with porphyry deposits.
  • Saddle (Canada) – A high-chargeability IP response corresponded with mineralized intercepts.

Big systems generally have big responses, but you still need drilling to confirm the actual metal content.”


Are Kingfisher’s Geophysics Showing Strong Targets?

Kingfisher Metals recently released IP data from its Highway 37 project, showing what Perry described as strong chargeability anomalies. However, he acknowledged that chargeability alone does not confirm mineralization. “Until something’s tested, you don’t know,” he admitted.

The company believes its targets are compelling because they align with historical drilling and geochemical anomalies.


What Are the Right Steps After a Geophysics Survey?

According to Perry, geophysics is just the starting point. The proper exploration sequence includes:

  1. Geochemical Sampling – To validate anomalies.

While Kingfisher Metals is not operating as a prospect generator, Perry acknowledged that the company has received joint venture interest from major companies. “We don’t think that’s in the best interest of shareholders right now,” he stated, though he did not rule out future deals.


How Much Are the Holding Costs for Kingfisher’s Land?

According to Perry, the company’s total work obligations are approximately $7 million over the next two years. The company currently has around $1.2 million in cash, with additional funds expected from tax credits. They will also need to raise capital soon to fund a potential drill program in 2025.

Kingfisher Metals has warrants outstanding at various strike prices:

  • 2.4 million warrants at $0.74 (expiring August 2025)

When Will Kingfisher Start Drilling?

Kingfisher plans to commence drilling by mid-June, aiming to capitalize on the summer exploration window in British Columbia’s Golden Triangle. The first phase of drilling will focus on the Williams target, an area where previous exploration, including geophysics and geochemical sampling, has indicated strong potential for copper-gold mineralization.

Perry emphasized that the company is targeting a well-defined chargeability anomaly that aligns with historical drilling, increasing confidence in hitting mineralization.

If the early results confirm a mineralized system, the company intends to expand drilling with step-out holes to assess the scale and continuity of the deposit. Kingfisher expects to have initial assay results by mid-July, providing investors with the first indication of whether the Williams target holds economic grades.

Will the CEO Participate in the Financing?

Perry said he is unlikely to participate in the next financing round due to personal tax obligations but did not rule it out if circumstances change.
