Geological Riches in Untapped Papua New Guinea

In the unpredictable world of mineral exploration, Adyton Resources (TSX-V: ADY) has set its focus on Papua New Guinea (PNG), a country rich in geological promise but also fraught with operational challenges. Leading this charge is Tim Crossley, Managing Director of Adyton, whose career in the mining industry spans several decades. During our recent conversation, Crossley outlined his plans for the company, the inherent challenges, and why he remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of Adyton’s assets. Adyton is not your typical junior mining company, and its projects—Ferguson Island and Feni Island—are both unique in their geological composition and potential. Ferguson Island is rich in shallow, low-cost gold resources, while Feni Island offers the potential for a major copper-gold discovery, possibly comparable to nearby world-class deposits in the same volcanic arc.

We’re not just another junior explorer. We’ve got real assets in a world-class discovery zone, and I think the market will recognize that as we start to deliver results.

Tim Crossley, CEO Adyton Resources (TSX-V: ADY)

Overview

Crossley begins by addressing the company’s financial position, which has garnered some skepticism. As of June 30, 2023, Adyton reported just under $2 million in current assets, primarily in cash and cash equivalents, with minimal liabilities. Crossley admits the company has been in a care-and-maintenance mode for nearly two years, reflecting both market conditions and an internal decision to pause major spending. However, he points out that the recent reactivation of exploration activity, particularly on Feni Island, is a sign of the company’s renewed focus on growth.

Adyton’s stock, trading at 11 cents with a market cap of around $24 million, reflects the market’s general skepticism toward junior explorers. Yet, insiders hold significant positions in the company. Crossley himself is one of the largest shareholders, with nearly 13 million shares, underscoring his personal commitment to the company’s success. “I’m not here just to take a salary,” he emphasizes. “I’ve got real skin in the game, and it’s not through sweat equity—I’ve bought stock on the market with my own money.”

Feni Island: A Potential Game Changer?

Much of the discussion centers around Feni Island, a project that Crossley believes holds tremendous untapped potential. The island, part of the Lihir volcanic arc, is known for its large gold and copper systems. Adyton’s current resource estimate for Feni, updated in October 2022, shows an inferred resource of 1.5 million ounces of gold at 0.75 grams per ton. But Crossley is quick to point out that the historical drilling largely ignored copper, a mistake Adyton aims to correct.

The next phase of exploration on Feni will focus not just on expanding the gold resource, but also on targeting deeper copper mineralization. Using new geophysical data, including a 3D IP anomaly, the company is planning a drilling program to test these deeper targets, with expectations of finding significant copper at depths not previously explored. Crossley explains that earlier drilling was shallow, with many holes not penetrating the layers where copper typically resides. “We believe there’s a lot more to Feni than just gold,” he says, “and the copper potential could be what really makes this project stand out.”

Ferguson Island: A Clear Path to Production?

While Feni is seen as the potential game-changer, Ferguson Island represents a more immediate opportunity. The island hosts two key prospects—Gameta and Wapolu—with a combined inferred resource of nearly 700,000 ounces of gold. Ferguson’s allure lies in its simplicity: the deposits are shallow, relatively low-cost, and located close to infrastructure.

Adyton’s joint venture agreement with East Vision Group on Ferguson provides a clear pathway to production. Under the terms of the deal, East Vision will fund the project through to feasibility and permitting, in exchange for a 50% stake in the asset. Crossley emphasizes that this agreement effectively gives Adyton a free ride to production, with East Vision also providing a shareholder loan to cover the capital costs of building the mine. “It’s a fantastic deal for our shareholders,” Crossley says, “because we’re not going to have to dilute ourselves to fund the project.”

The timeline for Ferguson is ambitious, with the goal of reaching production by 2026. Key milestones over the next two years include in-fill drilling to convert inferred resources into indicated, updating the mine plan, and completing a bankable feasibility study. Crossley remains confident that these timelines are achievable, citing his team’s deep experience in PNG and their success in navigating the country’s permitting process in previous ventures.

Navigating PNG’s Complexities

Operating in PNG comes with its own set of challenges, particularly around community relations and land ownership. Crossley is well aware of these issues, having spent significant time building relationships with local landowners. He stresses that gaining and maintaining local support is critical to the success of any project in PNG, where all land is held under customary ownership.

Crossley recently returned from a trip to Feni Island, where he conducted a series of community awareness meetings. “We got unanimous support from the local landowners,” he reports. “In PNG, it’s all about building trust with the communities, and I think we’ve done a good job of that.” This local engagement, combined with strong provincial and national government support, gives Crossley confidence that Adyton’s projects are on solid ground.

Seasonality is another factor to consider, particularly when it comes to timing exploration activities. PNG’s tropical climate brings heavy rains, but Crossley notes that both Feni and Ferguson are located on islands with good access to logistical support, minimizing the impact of weather on exploration. “We’re not dealing with the highlands where you need helicopters and trucks to move equipment,” he explains. “We’ve got a barge that can bring everything we need right to the beach.”

The Long-Term View: Tier One Potential?

Looking ahead, Crossley is particularly excited about Feni’s potential to become a tier-one asset. Located in the same volcanic arc as some of the world’s largest gold and copper mines—including Lihir and Panguna—Feni sits in what Crossley describes as “elephant country” for major discoveries. “If you want to find elephants, you go where elephants live,” he says. “We believe Feni could be a major discovery.”

Ferguson, while not as large as Feni, offers a more immediate opportunity. Crossley envisions it as a mid-sized producer, capable of delivering 100,000 ounces of gold annually over a 15- to 20-year mine life. “It’s never going to be the next Lihir, but it doesn’t have to be,” he says. “It’s shallow, it’s low-cost, and it’s got a clear path to production.”

The Road Ahead: Financing and Next Steps

One of the immediate challenges facing Adyton is financing its upcoming drilling program on Feni. Crossley acknowledges that the company will need to raise additional capital, either through a strategic partner or a traditional placement, but he remains confident that the market will support the project once the full potential of Feni becomes clear.

“We’re not just another junior explorer,” he asserts. “We’ve got real assets in a world-class discovery zone, and I think the market will recognize that as we start to deliver results.”

As Adyton moves forward, Crossley remains focused on executing his vision for the company—unlocking the value of its PNG projects while maintaining strong relationships with local communities and stakeholders. “This is a long game,” he says, “and we’re in it for the long haul.”
